I agree. It was a terrible shift. The government is the people, the people working together- and to see it as "the problem" is to see the people working together as a problem- which is pretty much the republican playbook- divide the people, make them hate working together, and give all the money to corporations.

At the moment, my own candidate for the most consequential election in my lifetime is Reagan's defeat of Carter in 1980. Trump may well turn out to be more so but it's a bit early to tell. The Reagan win gave validity to the right wing claim, as he put it, that the government is the problem. Changed a large portion of the political culture by putting that argument in the oval office.
