There is likely some truth in that. The "great thinkers", I assume, are from times way gone by, or maybe authors from 100 or more years ago. While there is some wisdom to be gotten from these people for sure, I'm not sure the relevancy of the majority of that thought holds water today.

There is a lot to be said for thinking about more contemporary issues. If you want to solve a problem, figure out how to make a computer reliably, 100% of the time, tell a cat from a dog. Or even recognize a cat whether the camera is facing the head or the ass. Find a new application for the Fast Fourier Transform, then you've done something.

There is a lot to be said for contemporaneous relevancy.

I did plenty of that, but I learned many years ago that the human species learns, it does not deduce things very well.

Civilization took off when we learned written language because at that point information could be passed on from one generation to the next accurately.

Information needs to be passed on to the next generation.

Everyone should spend their life reading the great learned people from time to time. We know who they are.

People like Bertrand Russell, etc.
