"a major impairment in some area of functioning that limits your independence" . . . can come at any time and is usually not permanent. You can't interpret statistics like that to mean permanent impairment.

When I broke my ankle in 2012 and my Mom broke her hand it limited our independence when she was 81 and I 57, but months later our independence was not limited and it remains so.

She tripped over a rake and I fell off a wall.
