Ramsey - Here is one article indicating some fundamental problems at Oracle and database industry that is independent from Asia. There is a better one that I am still trying to find but this tells some of it.

A Japanese car that used to cost $20,000 to make now only costs $17,000. This forces American auto-makers to lower their prices too. But our companies can't get any leaner.

You have to be kidding. The US car industry is far from being lean. I normally don't follow prices of cars (I rent), but I went to a GM showroom. An average family car (Buick Regal I believe) was 23K base, 27K with option. One of those nice 4 wheel drive big cars (Tahoe, or something like that) was $47,000.

I think the US car companies made good improvements in quality, but not much about efficiency. They were hiding behind weak dollar and kissing up to the unions. They are completely spineless.
