When he took over for Wentz, I thought his footwork in the pocket was poor, costing him accuracy and velocity. But now he looks very comfortable finding space and stepping into his throws.

Nick Foles' Comings and Goings ...

<< I never understood why they gave up on him so soon and he was sent here and there. >>

That one was hard to figure out. Chip Kelly was hard to figure out. He wanted a mobile quarterback and traded for Sam Bradford who had torn his ACL two years in a row, so how mobile was he going to be and for how long?

Back in March 2015 when the trade was made I posted an article titled "Chip Kelly's Radical Eagles Makeover in Progress" (and a post titled "Chip Kelly's off season plan: Ingenious?" that follows it) discussing that trade and others On SI's 'NFC East' board originally hosted by Dale Baker which I adopted upon his SI departure in 2014 and where I still occasionally talk to myself.

Chip started to blow up the Eagles when he cut Pro Bowl receiver DeSean Jackson a year earlier. Chip's offense was predicated on a mobile QB and that’s why he didn’t like Foles who had been drafted by Andy Reid, despite the success Foles enjoyed running his offense in 2013. By 2014 the league had figured out Kelly's offense and Foles play deteriorated. When Foles broke his collarbone in Week 9 of 2014 he was placed on injured reserve, and Mark Sanchez finished the season.

Kelly won a power struggle with Eagles GM Howie Roseman after the season and in March 2015, Kelly in his infinite wisdom (or lack of same) traded Foles, a 2015 fourth-round pick, and a 2016 second-round pick to the St. Louis Rams in exchange for Sam Bradford and a 2015 fifth-round pick. Evidently he figured that somehow he could parlay a trade of a rejuvenated Bradford for Marcus Mariota who he had recruited and initially coached at Oregon but Kelly was justifiably fired before the season end. GM Howie Roseman had to put the pieces back together which he did in admirable fashion.

As former Eagle LeSean McCoy recently stated: "I got a lot of love for Philadelphia now that the little short coach is with the kids where he belongs." I'm sure Chip will do well at UCLA. It IS where he belongs.
