I agree, I recently saw a program which discussed the benifits of cloning and embryo manipulation. Seems couple who are predisposed to genetically passing on some horrible diseases are finding allot of help with new techniques.

It does lead to some morally difficult decisions though. What if we get to the point that when a mother has her blood tested she will know right away if the baby is malformed or suffering from some disease like Turret syndrome.

Is the doctor required to inform the mother?
Should the doctor recommend termination?
Should the doctor try and change the embryo through manipulation?
What are the mothers rights?
Should the state be required to care for the infant if the parents knew at an early stage?
Should we allow gender selection to be available to everyone?

Here's one I really think we will one day face. If we can manipulate at the embryonic state a process which prolongs life, say 100's of years. Who should be allowed to use it? Everyone? Select few?
How would we chose?

I bet the overpopulation fanatics would have a field day with that one :-)

Mike

Ft, I agree with you on the cloning. There is no possibility of another "Hitler". Twins, of course, are clones, but they both developed in the same womb, with the same set of nutrients, exposure to their mother's cycles, stresses, colds, etc. This will not be the case with clones. Also, after birth, the clone will grow up in a different environment that the original, with a different set of parents. I predict that the clone will only resemble the original superficially. Doesn't it make you wonder how Hitler's clone would turn out under Christine's nurturing care?
