Black Swan, are you referring to Ontario?

The transaction in question is specifically exempted from Land Transfer Tax.
Sounds like someone doesn't know how to read.

Kind'a getting off topic, but...

I think I understand. It's an issue in the confusing way in which individuals and couples may hold title, advice about which is usually unavailable, or wrong for the the circumstances around the time deeds are drawn. ...and the laws can change anyway.

The recently passed new income tax law here just exempted millions more from inheritance taxes. Prior to this, it worked against owners passing existing businesses and farms within families that held them for generations. I saw this locally a few years ago with a couple of historic pubs/restaurants from Territorial Days, and in what was long ago a remote area near Phoenix. So what would have been the fourth generation of owners had to sell to pay the inheritance taxes, and those large old ranch-style buildings, and collections of Wild West artifacts had to be sold, removing some of our local cultural heritage in favor of condo's and zero-lot line homes among giant boulders and early native American habitation sites. Sad. I loved to take out-of-town visitors there. Everyone loved the places on adjoining sites below the Pinnacle Peak regional and early aviation landmark. My stomach turns where I drive by there now.

It's call putting the land to it highest and best use, but why should people who are not interested in that be forced to see highest and best use come about?
