Agree with all you are saying Kirk as I live pretty much the same way as you (even though we have both obviously reached ‘critical mass’). The question is, how many of the general population are ‘coupon clippers’ or even care about the nickel and dime differences in price. I know it all adds up as my 2-5% accumulated cash back on various credit cards that I use now totals about 10K, which is way better than a kick in the butt! Regarding your issue with selling long term held house with huge cap gains - don't forget you get a 500K exclusion which reduces Cap gains tax somewhat, even though in CA that isn't too huge a deal, but it helps somewhat.
