On this forum Republican politicians are often referred to as idiots. They are not. Their voters, other than the rich, are mostly idiots. The politicians themselves know exactly what they are doing. They espouse positions they themselves consider ridiculous because their base loves it, and they can't benefit their rich backers if they don't get elected. A few Republican politicians likely are idiots, but only a handful.

For example, in Kentucky, virtually no politician of either party privately believes that coal is good or is coming back. It is a pure callous political calculation to curry favor with the poor bastards that mine the stuff. They need the votes to get the money from the mine owners.....

Democratic politicians are well intentioned and favor mostly good policies, but they generally bring a knife to a gun fight. IMHO.
