Trump is right that the US is involved in way too many bad trade relationships with other countries. However, tariffs on steel and aluminum, uniformly applied to every country in the world is a terrible idea. Here's what I would do instead. Let's review our trade deals with the top 10 trading partners we have. And let's take Trump's idea of Tax Reciprocity one step further. Let's do reciprocity on EVERYTHING related to trade. For example, China does not let American businesses do business in China unless they form a joint venture with a Chinese firm and the American firm not only only takes no more than 49% of the JV, but the American firm has to share technology and IP with the Chinese firm. Yet, Chinese companies can come to the US and continue to own their companies 100%. In addition, many strategically important Chinese firms, like Huawei, get all sorts of help from the Chinese government. So my plan would be simple. We create new laws and policies that do trade with China on a 100% reciprocal basis. Everything policy they have, we enact. If they want leniency from us, they must agree to bringing down trade barriers on their end, before we do it on our end. Same thing in Brazil. Brazil imposes a 100% Duty and Tax on all imported American goods, but Brazilian companies don't get taxed for imports into the US much at all. Again, we should tax Brazilian goods at 100% on import to the US. Full reciprocity. If there are any of you out there that doesn't like full reciprocity, then you are sheep being slowly cooked for the wolves of this world to eat. It's time for the US to stop being the lamb for the slaughter. Trump is right about the concept, but so far, I don't like his implementation with the product focused tariff.
