- Siemens AG (OTC BB:SMAWY - news; SIEG.F) and Motorola Inc (NYSE:MOT - news) said on Monday the expect a new joint development center toyield technology that sharply increases productivity and reduces costs in the production ofcomputer chips in two to three years. The companies said they would invest 1.5 billion marks ($822.5 million) to develop technology toproduce semiconductors on 300 millimetre wafers, instead of the 200 millimetre wafers usedtoday. The larger silicon disks would yield 230 of the most advanced memory chips, while 91256-megabit memory chips would fit on the wafers now in use, for a total cost reduction of 30percent and 250 percent gain in production.''This represents a huge improvement,'' said Hector de J. Ruiz, president of Motorola'ssemiconductor products sector. The companies plan to perfect the technology on a pilot manufacturing line in Dresden and then totransfer it to their other chip plants.''Depending on market demand, this means manufacturing capacity would be commerciallysignificant after the year 2001, Siemens said in a statement.
