There are some very poor backward rural counties in Washington state: en.wikipedia.org I don't know Ark, or Miss- nor do I wish to- but I know a little about Washington. Western Washington is a different world from Eastern Washington- politically, economically- every which way. It's a lot like Coastal California versus the Central Valley- where you've got really dire poverty and a lot of complete idiots- not to mention a ton of meth. There are solutions to problems of poverty and ignorance- but they require services, and services cost money, and republicans like magical solutions that don't require money (unless they're looking for a solution for how to make the rich even richer- then it's ok to spend money. It's also ok to spend on the military. But poor folks? Not so much.)
