(Thereby inducing consumers to 'upgrade' their TV sets every 12 months? Do you really think people would do that? Granted, there is probably an easier way around this, but remember, a significant percentage of people can't even program their own VCRs.) There is a strong impetus for MSFT to shift to the subscription business model. This lowers the volatility of thier revenue stream by eliminating the need for a upgrade pattern. This method also coincides with the business models currently used by the cable and printed media industries.
