Batteries and other storage systems to even out power supply and demand is expensive, but so are the externalities caused by use of coal for electricity. Anyway, the debate over climate change and renewable energy is one that is like religion for most people. So it holds little interest for me anymore. Here's what I know for a fact. I live somewhere, where I get zero subsidies from Federal or State for installing solar in my home. I did the analysis 5 years ago and I could break-even in 7 years on a system that generates 100% of my electricity needs. It's probably even better now. I didn't do it, because my homeowner's association wouldn't let me build it. They said it would be unsightly. LOL. Maybe, I'll check out Musk's new solar shingles as an alternative and propose it again to the HOA and see what they say. So you say it isn't cost competitive, but I know you are wrong. If we had a grid that was two-way and allowed for decentralization, as well as large scale renewable plants, then it would open up all sorts of possibilities, including the democratization of energy. But I know the big oil and gas lobbies will never let that happen, until such a time as they have a lock on the renewables markets and can no longer extract a profit from their primary businesses. It is what it is. So we can debate the points if you want to, but I'll continue to do so with lackluster interest, because I know that most people have religious zeal on this topic and have chosen their god one way or another. No amount of discussion of facts will change anything.
