They do float. the brakes on mine failed and I drove it right off the dock into the lake.
Interesting, they were also the only car I have ever seen that had stirrups in the back seat.

My suspicions confirmed. Obviously, I never saw the "ad" in the first place. My first two company cars were VW bugs. I traveled across Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, Oklahoma and parts of Louisiana on business. No A/C in those days. Only because I was young. After two of those bugs, my next company car was a Buick!
