I used the word elitist because you seem to hold the idea that not having to be under the gun leads to pathological behavior. For most people, their just don't have ambitions of accumulating all of the available wealth in the system. They get to a particular position in life and stop struggling to gain more and more. But that is because they aren't sociopaths.

And what else happened in the sixties besides deindustrialization? Well, there was that hippie thing, the rebellion against the bourgeois, the liberties that exploded the heads of social conservatives. That might have had something to do with Fishtown. Or the civil and women's rights movements. Or the war. Lotsa other stuff correlates.

And very few of those things had much effect on the working class. I will grant you that civil and women's rights did have an effect. Even major ones. Especially in the case of greater economic opportunity. Now it very well may be that economic opportunity for the working class is zero sum, that economic opportunity can only be expanded for some groups at the expense of the others. That would be unexpected behavior for most economic systems, but...
