he seems to have written lots of books with a certain bent

Ethnic America didn't have a bent. I loaned my copy to a handful of people who appreciated it. One black colleague and I spent a lot of time discussing it, particularly Sowell's ability to relate to and appreciate the variations among the European immigrants who were its subject. They didn't "all look alike." So, I became a fan. And my colleague became a fan, pursuing other works by him. I don't think the book deserved a Nobel. <g> But he produced at least one thing of value.

I've seen a number of thoughtful pieces by him. He's politically incorrect but I think straightforward, honest, and respectful. These days, those qualities are a blessing, regardless on content.

Something is a little off...

Probably the race/worldview mismatch.

Perhaps, but it isn't Sowell.

There are, in fact, many people questioning why he hasn't received a Nobel, but the answer to the question is rather obvious. Did you ever read Krugman's paper? I've seen better work from MBA students.

It just isn't about the quality and originality of the work sometimes. I'm sure you can think of examples.

The Nobel in some categories has totally lost its meaning...
