Vivid Technologies Receives Order For Hand Baggage Inspection System From U.S. Government Agency

Also Announces Appointment of James Buckley as Vice President Business Development

WOBURN, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 13, 1998-- Vivid Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ:VVID - news) today announced that it received an order from a U.S. government agency for six of its Model APS explosives detection systems. The systems are being used for building protection in a non-aviation environment. The Model APS is the first hand baggage and parcel X-ray system to automatically inspect parcels for explosives and contraband in addition to assisting the operator in the detection of weapons. The contract has a value of approximately $450,000 and was purchased under GSA contract. For security reasons, the government agency purchasing the APS systems and the specific installation sites cannot be disclosed.

To date, the U.S. government has relied on conventional X-ray imaging systems to inspect baggage and parcels entering government facilities. Acknowledging the need for updated technology to address an evolving threat, this order represents the first large-scale deployment of automated explosives detection equipment in a non-aviation environment. With the introduction of the Model APS, Vivid Technologies is applying its proven explosives detection technology to applications outside of airline passenger baggage inspection and addresses an increasing need to improve physical security at high profile government and private facilities.

In a separate development, Vivid announced the appointment of James Buckley as vice president business development. Mr. Buckley comes to Vivid with extensive experience in the aviation security and process instrumentation markets. Prior to joining Vivid, Mr. Buckley held positions of increasing responsibility at Thermedics Detection.

''We are very excited to have an individual of Jim's caliber joining our sales and marketing team,'' said Jim Aldo, vice president of marketing and sales for Vivid. ''As one of the explosives detection industry's founders, he is one of the most knowledgeable people in the business and we look forward to his contributions to Vivid's continuing growth.''

Vivid Technologies Inc. is the leading developer, manufacturer and marketer of automated explosives detection systems that detect plastic and other explosives in airline baggage, hand baggage and parcels. Approximately 220 Vivid explosives detection systems have been sold for use as primary and secondary airport baggage inspection systems worldwide.

Vivid's systems have been selected for use in 29 airports in 14 countries including London's Heathrow and Gatwick Airports, Brussels in Belgium, Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport, Zurich in Switzerland, Amsterdam Schiphol, Kuala Lumpur International Airport in Malaysia, Chek Lap Kok Airport in Hong Kong and Terminal One - JFK International Airport.
