Thomas. A quick report from Alaska. Our local paper reports Unocal Corp.announcing pending layoffs at it's Nikiski Ak plant. 670,000 short tons ammonia and 1.1 million short tons urea production yearly with 340 employees.

About 60 percent of the production has been going to asia. The article mentioned that China had been a steady customer but has made no purchases in the last year. This plant competes with newer plants in Indonesia, Malaysia, Venezuela and Canada.

The company plans to do some upgrading to try to be more competitive in the future. The plant manager was very bearish on prices for ammonia/urea.

Perhaps someone on the thread has info regarding these newer plants and possible investments. What companies will be positioned to profit in the production of these basic chemicals when (if?) demand takes off again?. Will there be closures and consolidations in this industry?

Staying warm...Bob Toll
