I just spent the last 2 days of no-sleep hell slapping together an industrial/commercial for a major major Business Communications firm. This company is not the topic of this discussion except to say that the Chief Officer of Sales showed up drunk after a 4 martini lunch to be filmed in his talking head role.

Anyway, we did the audio mix and final graphics at Sony Studios on 54th St., and in our Pro-Tools room I spied a device that caught my attention. It was an old SyQuest 44MB drive sitting on top of a rack of gear next to the engineer. No Jaz to be seen. I suspect they do have Jaz and maybe SyJet in another room, but the point is that Jaz is not the necessary professional item that some here would like you to believe. Iomega's life depends totally on Zip, and that franchise is the only thing saving them from drowning in a sea of product delays and management ineptitude. The higher end Jaz line is still completely open to competition. The 2.1 Gig Orb will DEFINITLEY catch attention when it is released later this Quarter.

For $199, you can now buy a 1 Gigabyte SyQuest SparQ, and in the near future, a 2.1 Gigabyte Orb. Add to that the 4.7 Gigabyte SyQuest Quest (Rocket) that is priced right where the still unreleased Jaz2 is.

The Jaz line is DEAD.
