The dogs were barking on Tuesday, with Ascend, Bay and 3Com posting sharp gains ... The former
shot up on news that Salomon Smith Barney upped its rating to buy from neutral... ASND now back above
50-day moving average... Key resistance at 32 1/4... If stock can climb above this ceiling amid strong volume
a move back to the upper-30s would be in order... Traders must have concluded that if its okay to buy
Ascend, then the outlook for the others can't be too bad either... Whatever the rationale, group posted its
best session in weeks... Oddly enough, industry leader Cisco lagged behind gaining only 5/16. From Briefing.com

Considering SSB's $35-ASND-12-mo target price, a merger would push the price to at least low 40s. It certaingly beats the SSB's target price.
It took LU 8 month from when the rumor started to actually buy Octel.
The improved visibility forces the potential acquirer to act quickly and at a good price. I wouldn't mind a price > $42/shr. A merger usually happens when we least expect it. On the other hand the conservative price target of $35 by SSB gives ASND mgmt more incentive to agree to a synnergistic buy out to deliver the best return for shareholders. It's about time to do shareholders something nice given that they have been traumatized over 1/2 year.

If both LU and ASND prices keep going up, LU could afford to bide their while ?

Sandy, Indeed- take a look at the number of March 40 call options which have been written on ASND- pretty impressive. Looks like a lot of people are making that bet......

Sincerely,

Doug F.
