3Com Corporation's Total Control HiPer Access System Wins Tester's Choice Award
From Data Communications Magazine

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 13, 1998--

Review of High-End Remote Access Concentrators Concludes Total

Control Platform Is the Fastest and Most Scalable

3Com Corporation (NASDAQ:COMS) today announced that its Total Control(TM)
HiPer(TM) access system received the Tester's Choice Award from Data
Communications magazine for the fastest remote access server in a test of seven
vendors' equipment.

This was billed as the largest public evaluation of RAS technology ever
conducted.

Data Communications tested 200 concurrent dial-in calls for each access
concentrator participating in the review and also appraised scalability and
management. Data Communications evaluated equipment from Ascend Communications,
Bay Networks, Cisco Systems, Multi-Tech Systems, RAScom, Shiva Corp. and 3Com.
Its editors wrote: "The fastest was the Total Control HiPer access system from
3Com Corp., a beefed-up version of the Total Control hub that now accommodates
up to 450 calls per chassis."

The editors added: "High port density and strong scalability are the
hallmarks of 3Com's Total Control HiPer access system, ... and our test showed
this device scaled up linearly as calls were added. The vendor also deserves
kudos for its Total Control Manager software, which allowed us to detect
hardware failures, run diagnostics, and perform virtually any other management
function."

In the area of remote access server scalability, 3Com beat the competition
soundly, including the Ascend MAX TNT and the Cisco AS5300. In configurations
above 100 ports, 3Com's Total Control HiPer access system scaled in an almost

linear manner for performance as remote users were added. The competitive
offerings leveled off at 125 dial-in clients.

"This award clearly demonstrates our commitment to building leading edge
remote access solutions that can scale to very large sizes," said Irfan Ali,
vice president of marketing, Carrier Systems, 3Com. "The Total Control platform
is ideally suited as a multi-service access platform that can meet a wide range
of applications and networking needs."

The Total Control remote access concentrator is designed for carriers, ISPs
and corporate enterprises that need to support thousands of remote users or
Internet subscribers. With its HiPer DSP technology, the Total Control system
has the flexibility to terminate modem, ISDN, multimedia and voice calls all in
the same DSP engine. The Total Control platform is the only remote access
concentrator that was originally designed with a software-upgradable
architecture.

Why can't LU reach an agreement with ASND,

I would think because they only want to pay $35-40 and Ascend is worth about $50. We will be at $40 soon...so by June who knows....maybe will have someone more serious involved by then?

Do we get a pop tomorrow, now that we finally have upgrades?

Jeff
