Intel has said multiple times, ever since they introduced the Pentium II, that the primary reason for the lower gross margin of this piece is the SRAM. They repeated this many times in today's cc.

Intel has never made any public comment suggesting a departure from Slot I as the only desktop form factor.

On the other hand, Intel has already announced that they will produce a Slot I Pentium II with integrated cache. I'm merely suggesting that SRAM pricing in 6 months, which is when these pieces are expected, may alter the manufacturing dynamics.
