I followed this story very closely and it was Trudeau who first blasted Trump. Trump being Trump couldn't let it go especially since he was on his way to meet Kim Jung Un.

Unfortunately Trudeau felt he had to virtue signal to the world his criticisms of Trump instead of using quiet diplomacy. Hopefully this will all blow over.

Trudeau has been criticized within Canada for his weakness iirc.

At any rate he came across as trying to show that he could be a tough guy. It wasn’t a good look for him. He looked kind of silly.

The reality is Canada is stuck with the US to the south and unless they want to spend a lot more dough they’re going to have to buy stuff from us.
