He is like Reagan in that respect. There was a famous speech, well famous in geek circles at least, when Hans Mark corralled Reagan right before he was to give a speech. While other NASA officials ran interference, Hans talked to Reagan about some NASA projects, and even reached over and scribbled some stuff on Reagan's notes to remind him. Reagan gave the speech, talked about a bold,new presence in space and soon after NASA had approval for their space station...

It was pretty critical for NASA. Most of Reagan's advisers wanted steep cutbacks in NASA funding. As it was, the Shuttle was costing far more than expected and had almost eaten NASA's budget. So the space station gave them some breathing room.
