There are those Trumpists who support this tariff action because they think it will save jobs. And there those who support it because they see it as a move towards free trade. Re the latter, no one I have seen has connected the dots.

I'm no economist so I could be missing something but I cannot imagine setting a goal of free trade and then thinking that the logical first step is a trade war. That would seem to be the least likely approach to free trade. But I suppose that Trump could be just smacking the hornet's nest to get people's attention at which time he says, now that I have your attention, just kidding, let's do free trade. But, if that's the case, then he will have reneged on his protectionist jobs campaign promise bigly. Free trade and his campaign rhetoric don't match.

I keep looking for explanations that make sense but no joy.
