Doesn't the government require every employer get an I9 form completed which requires proof of citizenship or eligibility to work? Immigration is the federal governments responsibility not the states's. If previous administrations ignored the immigration policy then they should have been impeached. If the immigration law is unjust or broken Congress should fix it. Trump if anything has proven that the laws as currently written are broken because they are heavily left to executive interpretation and he has also proven that both republicans and democrats only pay lip service to correcting the issue. Both parties are impotent when it comes to actual performance on this issue. Or as Koan would say EVIL! Demicans and Republicrats.

How else would ICE find people who are here illegally other than asking to see their papers?

Perhaps I missed something in the track of the conversation. If an employer is verifying an applicant's eligibility to work in the US, it's the employer would be asking for their papers. If they didn't have papers, they would be deterred from applying in which case ICE would not have a play.. Nothing about verification for employment purposes implies ICE tracking anyone down in search of papers. Perhaps you were talking about something else and I missed it.

Knowing one could not get a job without papers would deter entry into the country by illegal economic immigrants. That was recognized some time back and placed in legislation, just never happened.

As for stopping people just going about their business and asking for papers like the Gestapo, I find that outrageous. I would hope everyone would.
