I would hope everyone would. You would hope that. But that hope would be in vain. That is what got Joe Arpaio in trouble. Well, one of the things. He and his posse would routinely stop certain people and ask for their papers. But, ICE is apparently authorized to do that within a reasonable distance from a border. They define "reasonable" as within 100 miles of a national border. Which includes major bodies of water. like the Gulf of Mexico, the Atlantic and the Pacific. They want to include the Great Lakes, but that is sort of iffy. I don't think they can include the Great Salt Lake. Or rivers like the MIssissippi, but it wouldn't surprise me if they tried. Anyway, within those jurisdictions, they can and will stop people and ask for their papers. detaining those who can't prove they are legally in the country. They will stop cars and buses and check the occupants. They will even do it beyond the hundred miles if they think they can get away with it. Heck, there was even a case where a French woman was visiting her mother in Canada. One day, she went out for a jog and accidentally crossed an unmarked border. ICE picked her up and kept her in detention for two weeks before it could get cleared up. I imagine the fact she was black did not help here cause at all... So the stopping of profiled people and asking for papers like the Gestapo is a practice that is alive and well if you are within 100 miles of a border. There are a lot of people who would like the see the practice include the whole country.
