HI goldsnow!
Good answer!
I live in Toronto, am glad to have health care, but am under no delusion as to who is paying for it.It is a real art for a society to try and balence social justice and true freedom of the individual. Both of our societies are trying, from different approaches.I hope one day, in the not too far future, between the two ways of reaching this, a good solution will be found that all of the world can implement.
In regards to how this topic got started. We all have our stories regarding other races, other than our own.I had dreamed the internet would transcend a lot of the racial inuendoes.IMHO
it is suffice to say "Blood is thicker than water" when it comes to these matters.
Respectivly yours,
Dave T.

goldsnow,

<<First, you do indeed better off in Canada if you are poor or simply happy. I do not think that you can start Microsoft or even act on your ambitions and God given potential unless indeed you cross the border.>>

My answer to that is BS .... there are some very large very successful Canadian companies .... started right here in Canada. Do you honestly believe the US has somehow cornered the market on becoming an entrepreneur. The fact is ... there are 10 times more of you than us ... so you would expect more US entrepreneurs ... that just stands to reason.

<<Free medicine is a propagated illusion it does not exist.>>

Who said anything about "free medicine" .... of course it costs money ... tax money - but the reality is - whether you want to buy it or not - our medical system is quite good - and costs significantly less to administer than the US system ... numerous studies have provent that.

<<Quality-not even close if you want new hip or glaucoma operation, chances are you are on waiting list for a long time or had it done in USA.>>

When you look at outcomes ... sorry ... our system is as good - and in some cases better. As far as waiting lists go .... I do not know what you hear there - but, while you may have to wait for your new hip for a few weeks (maybe even a couple of months), that is considered a relatively minor issue for most of us. Fact is, often we have Americans coming here, particularly children, because we offer procedures that are not available there. I am sure the reciprical is also true too.

<<Taxes, gasoline, regulations, waiting for procedures and services
for a long time, inability to afford much, certainly not a house all well-known facts.>>

Our gas does cost slightly more ... we do wait slightly longer for some of the services .... as far as housing is concerned .... most Canadians live in their own homes.

<<Canadian system would have been overwhelmed and in no way able to deal with magnitude of the problem>>

Oh ... we have dealt with the problems ... certainly do not have solutions to all of the issues - but all things considered, we have faired quite well.

goldsnow,

Good points. I was also struck by Mark's claim of a better medical system in Canada. It's become almost a given from what I understand (Mark, feel free to correct), that if you need surgery in Canada you get in line and wait and wait and.. then come to the US when you can't wait any more.

Ah, the benefits of truly socialized medicine. I say that knowing that we may not be far behind.
