Cheeky Kid,

I wasn't thinking in terms of a new ISP. Indeed, there is a glut of ISPs--some better and more supportive than others. Correct again: ISPs are being bought up or are merging with the big guys. I don't see any future for small or independent ISPs. Besides, ISPs going with flat usage rates have ceased to be profitable. I doubt that ISPs providing 24-hour, hand-holding tech support via an 800 number are making much of a profit. I have found ISP tech support to be hit and miss and highly variable in quality. I know there are a lot of reasons for this which are not necessarily the fault of the ISP. Your idea of wandering the hinterlands with a high-grade notebook is more what I had in mind.

You mention telephones and people's resistance to them and their thinking that talking through wires was evil. People also resisted electricity for a number of reasons, one of which was that they were afraid actual fire was coursing through their walls and floors.

I do seem to know a lot about the computer industry but could stand to know a lot more. I've been into computing for a good many years and remember the Internet on Unix, long before it put on a graphical pretty interface. In those days, we didn't click a mouse, we issued lengthy and complicated commands to get to where we wanted to go. That said, please understand that I never had to walk ten miles to school in the snow and that doing my laundry has never involved rivers and rocks. I do not have vivid recollections of the Ice Age. <vbg>
