You're close Doug. Equity options use to trade until 4:10 pm et, but too often news would come out after the close and the market makers would be unable to hedge their trades with stock. The options close now at 4:02 pm et to allow for any late prints on the stock. Options open with an "opening rotation" as soon as the stock has started trading, but no earlier than 9:30 am et. Incidentally, index options close at 4:15 pm et coinciding with the close of the S&P 500 futures contract.
