I am just curious about what you ASND guys think about owning a company that competes with almighty CSCO.

1. All stocks go up and down.
2. There wouldn't be a #1 w/o a #2
3. Every dog has its day...this year Ascend began to bark, now its time to growl.
4. The networkers product line don't all compete head to head.
5. The bigger they are the harder they fall. Its day is coming.
6. And what will you think if Lucent does acquire Ascend?

Jeff

JRH,

CSCO is a great stock to own. I wish I had purchased it years ago, but right now now I agree with Style Pts in that this one is bloated and has a lot less upside in the short-term than ASND. Don't believe all of the hype about ASND losing marketshare to CSCO, 3COM, or BAY. ASND is definitely holding its own particularly with CSCC adding to the mix. The bonus with ASND is that there are some real hunger suitors out there who WILL pounce on this stock if they can get a clearer future on Ascend's earnings future. Don't buy this stock on takeover rumor, buy it because it WILL kick butt in 1998!!!!!

IMHO!

Cheers,

Steve

<competes with almighty CSCO>
Don't you keep up with current news? Watch out CSCO before ASND eats your lunch. CSCO AS5300 something does not have the density of MAX TNT yet!!!! How about core switching? Hello Cascade GX-550 and the Williams 150 MM contract. CSCO was not even considered due to no OC48 product. Losing market shares??? How about upcoming AT&T WorldNet, RBOCs and NTT (ASND is the only vendor). Do your homework before investing. Good luck.

<< am just curious about what you ASND guys think about owning a company that competes with almighty CSCO.>>

You've got that backwards - CSCO competes against us (in the WAN space), and not too well so far TNT outdoes 5300 and CSCC kicks Stratacom's butt. ASND is not in the LAN space where CSCO is king.

<<ASND has been losing market share to CSCO in its core business>>

That's marekt perception, not reality.
I know one major telco is upgrading its Europe WAN FR network from Stratcom to Cascade boxes. Who is losing to whom?

ASND has been losing market share to CSCO in its core business. Is this true, or am I being obtuse in my thinking?

At the Scottsdale Morgan Stanley conference, Ejabat said that ASND has gained ATM market share in 4Q97. However, I'm not sure if you are referring to the core switching market.
