You need to watch the program to get him and understand the development of his ideas. He was not writing idle self-contained pieces. For example, in his 30-page manifesto, he has praises for capitalism and later in life (much after he wrote Das Kapital) he was speculating in the stock market.

Long story short - he actually was pushing for human and social freedom. One of his key points was that what distinguishes humans from animals is that humans can produce whatever they want. He objected to the industrial machinery that turned humans into robots that did only one thing. When you look at what was going on in factories and farms during that time, his point was valid.

His main mistake (or perhaps premature) was that he believed we could analyze social events and society with the same precision that a chemist can manage chemical-chain.

Anyway, I found the series interesting. I had of course, known of their philosophies, but the series put that knowledge in a different light.

Re: Some of our customers send people on the audit team with the apparent intent of proving to their peers that we are a bad choice. This is not a technical goal but a political goal, as SaaS is an existential threat to CTOs who have big internal budgets.

LOL! And as I am writing this, I am wrapping up my audit of a SaaS security risk profile to present to CxO review board. Some vendors really do try to pull the wool over our eyes. From where I stand, if they are sincere, they should welcome the opportunity to brag to me about how great they are in protecting our data...but that is another story. I fully agree with you about SaaS being a huge threat to CIOs.
