Brian - Re: " Advanced Micro Devices met its goal of shipping approximately 1.5 million K6 microprocessors during the fourth quarter,"

I just got through listening to AMD's October Conference Call (following Q3 Loss Report).

Jerry stated their goal was to double K6 shipments in Q4 to 2 million units.

AMD MISSED that goal by by 25%!

Re: "Intel dipped to 82% of sales ."

Wow - all the way down to 82%. No wonder Intel lost all that money last quarter.

The K6 is definitely selling, I have one myself, and AMD is working diligently to transition from last year's technology to relevancy in the quarter-micron space. That's a gamble but one which I feel is worth taking and one which I feel would be worth investing in. I am willing to give them a generous PE, too, of perhaps 20. When, in your estimate, will they drop below $10 which would be my entry price based on a forward PE of 20? Would you recommend a more conservative entry point in the $6 to $8 range to act as a buffer against further yield slippage?

Brian,

Looks like VIA is now shipping its new chipsets with a 100 mhz bus.
Here is the article.

VIA offers PC100 core logic

VIA Technologies on Thursday will introduce a core-logic chip set that brings many of the technologies of Pentium
II-based, Slot 1 systems to Socket 7-based PCs.

The Apollo MVP3 will allow OEMs of systems based on Intel-competitive CPUs to offer a 100-MHz system bus;
100-MHz, PC100 synchronous DRAM; and the Accelerated Graphics Port.

The chip set is compatible with all Socket 7 processors, including Advanced Micro Devices' AMD-K5 and
AMD-K6, Integrated Device Technology/Centaur's WinChip C6, Intel's Pentium and Pentium MMX, and National
Semiconductor/Cyrix's 6x86 and 6x86MX.

A two-chip solution, the Apollo MVP3 consists of the VT82C598AT north bridge and the VT82C586B south bridge.

The chip set supports as much as 1GB of DRAM, 2MB of Level 2 cache memory, and interfaces such as the
Universal Serial Bus and Ultra DMA/33.

Already shipping to more than 20 OEMs, the chip set is priced at $29 each in quantities of 1,000.

VIA Technologies Inc., in Fremont, Calif., can be reached at (510) 683-3300 or via.com.tw.

Brian, I liked this quote from the first reference:

By product line, the Pentium MMX remained
the dominant processor in November,
accounting for 60.7 percent of all x86 retail
sales. The Pentium II, by contrast,
represented 17.2 percent of all November
retail sales.

Add AMD's 15% market share to the 60.7%, and MMX Socket 7 outsold slot I by more than 4 to 1. Since chip availability from AMD increased a lot in December, I would expect that AMD's number is climbing.
