RE:It may be useful to study the list of companies ordering trial
systems - most likely, these are near-future DUV users. A post listing
companies working with CYMER equipment appeared a few days ago. All I
recall (off the top of my head) is that CYMER had far more customers
in Taiwan than in Korea. I'll try to locate this post, also there
could be a partial listing in 10K. The size and geography of companies
on this list may provide some insights into the near-term DUV
market.

From the 10K:
The following semiconductor manufacturers have purchased one or more
DUV photolithography tools incorporating the Company's laser:

United States Japan Korea

Advanced Micro Devices Fujitsu Hyundai
Digital Equipment Corporation Hitachi Lucky Goldstar
IBM Mitsubishi Electric Samsung
Integrated Device Technology NEC
Intel Corporation NTT Europe
Micron Technology Oki Electric
Motorola Sharp C-Net
Rockwell Sony IMEC
SEMATECH* Toshiba LETI
Texas Instruments Philips
SGS Thompson
Taiwan Siemens

ERSO/ITRI
ProMos
TSMC
UMC
Vanguard International

Didn't look that closely at the list, but the top 20 have purchased
Cymer based tools. There are actually one or two big companies
missing from this Dec. 31, 1996 list that are ramping DUV production
right now(National Semiconductor for one example). Their list of
Taiwanes companies(process technology laggards) has increased by two
since then.

Here's the list of customers in SEA:

Y.,

One last thing for this evening.

RE:Consider the AMD case: they were probably one of the first companies experimenting with DUV. I would guess that they have been working on DUV at least since early 1997 - witness a July article describing their experience with DUV lasers (and one of the issues raised in that article was that introduction of DUV requires massive process reengineering, production line balancing etc.). They are under a lot of pressure, yet just starting the .25 ramp up.

DUV has been in the lab for several years now. 1998 is when it comes out of the lab into production. Levinson published his DUV work(done in '96) for AMD in the '97 SPIE "Microlithography, blah, blah Handbook". IBM has their old work in this field at:
