I notice that the part of my brain I use to write is a bad speller. The part of my brain that reads is pretty good. So when I get done writing something, I have to read it to catch the misspellings.

Kids in verbal spelling contests astound me.
A very small percentage of kids based on my experience. I employed a lot of summer students. Smart kids but their spelling was awful

Not only was their spelling awful. Their basic math skills were even worse even if using calculators. We all know how easy it is to make a one digit error on a calculator. Without basic math skills these kids don't recognize these monumental errors.
