It isn't as much as you are thinking.Once you get deep enough that little or no sunlight penetrates, photosynthesis is no longer a viable lifestyle. So those creatures depend on the rain of organics to live. You mentioned whales. Dead whales create entire ecosystems as long as supplies last. Heck, there are even creatures that specialize in eating the bones.
