I hang out with affluent corporate types and academic types, who are almost all self-made people, so it's about 50/50 between liberals and conservatives. However, to all of their credit, they aren't angry people. Mostly, they live cush lives and are happy with how they have performed. But they do say some startlingly insensitive things at times. The liberals among my friends are fine human beings and legitimately caring people, but they don't see the flaws in themselves at all. When we get together, I have noticed my conservative friends and myself tend to either avoid political discussions or we soft pedal our own opinions so as not to upset any of our liberal friends. It's a form of self-censorship. It's an amazing thing when you step back and look at it all. In many ways, the liberals have taken the upper hand in our culture. Many times, cultural taboos and subtle rules of civil society are far more powerful than any laws we pass. That's what has me worried. Political correctness and bullying, as well as self-censorship and a complete disregard for freedom of speech all are now the norm in American culture. In that way, the liberals have won without firing a shot and the conservatives have ceded the field. Why do you think Socialism is winning right now? Conservatives are ceding the field to Socialism just like they ceded the field to Political Correctness. They don't know how to fight back. They refuse to take the moral stand that Capitalism = Freedom and Socialism = Slavery. But they treat Capitalism like it's political kryptonite and so the Socialists win. Not good. Not good for the America I love and the American environment that allowed me the opportunities to succeed. BTW, my father and grandfather felt the full effects of Democratic Socialism in all it's end state destructiveness. That is why for me this is not an academic debate. It is literally about the survival of the American Dream. If we allow the Socialists to win, they will destroy this country. That is not a "fear". That is experience and a depth of historical knowledge speaking.
