>>Who was that got (is getting?) the Nomai disk? (was it you, Allen?) Did you run your tests yet?<<

Spank -

Yes, that was me. I'm glad you brought this up, because I've been feeling like I have dropped the ball on this.

As I reported last month, I got the disks and ran some tests using a program which does continuous writes/reads/verifies. After something like ten hours of continous use, a Zip disk had no errors or problems. When I ran the test for the same period on a Nomai disk, two blocks started showing errors and were marked bad. On the first few passes, the Nomai disk had not had any bad blocks.

After I had run this test on the Nomai disk, I noticed that the Zip drive began to occasionally make noises which indicate that the heads are resetting when I ran the test again on a Zip disk, but the Zip disks continued to show no errors or bad blocks.

I have not previously reported the following:

When I told my wife about the head reset noises the drive was making, she didn't want me to use her Mac for testing Nomai disks anymore. I have thought about hooking up my Zip Plus to her Mac for continued testing, but I find I am a bit afraid to do it. Don't want to screw up the Zip Plus. Unfortunately, the testing program I have runs only on a Mac.

My wife does report that the Zip drive still seems to be working fine in normal use.

My conclusion from this testing is that the Nomai disks may work in most Zip drives, but the quality of the media is not up to Iomega standards. I'd love to have the heads of my wife's Zip drive inspected to see if there is any residue on them that would indicate that media/head contact has occurred.

At this point I'm not sure there's much purpose in doing further testing. Nomai does not have access to Fuji ATOMM media, and for that reason alone I believe their disks will always be inferior to the real deal.

One thing I do want to do is to try the Nomai disks in a laptop Zip drive, if I can find one that isn't sealed in a box. At CompUSA all they have is boxed units. At present I am keeping the Nomai disks only as a curiosity, and will not use them for any purpose other than checking out how they work in a laptop Zip.

SyQuest 4.7 Gig Quest Shipping!!!???

HAHAHA!!! Looks like Syquest is getting Quest out the door before Iomega can salvage what's left of its Jaz2!

apstech.com

Due to APS's stupid use of frames, I cannot link directly with the page. Look under Products, then Removable Media, then Syquest. APS claims to already have it for $599.

Just check out the specs on this amazing device:

syquest.com

Note that dual-air filtration system. This may not mean anything to those of you in snowy, clean-aired Colorado (except Denver-- jeez, that place is gross), but here in NYC, you can count how many days a project has been set aside by measuring the inches of dust deposited on it. This place is dusty. And Syquest knows that putting a high quality feature like air filteration in a system like this is a must. Jaz2 sells for about the same price-- with no air filteration, and less than half the capacity to boot. Not even MR tech! Jaz is an old, gray product with a crooked cane and shaky hands.

Rumors abound that one can already order one of these amazing Quest drives. According to the Syquest web page, shipping to OEM's was in December 1997. This info has not been updated, so we'll see if it is true.
