As to France and Spain not sure what we took from them

Montesquieu and his book “ The Spirit of the Laws”. Big influence on Jefferson and other Founding Fathers in drafting the Constitution, especially separation of powers.

Well, we bought Louisiana from the French and won Texas,
1/2 of Calif. and the Southwest from Mexico in a border war.
We also won the Phillipines, Cuba, Porto Rico and a little
more from Spain in 1898, but we didn't keep most of the
territory. The US isn't really Colonialist, like England,
Spain and France.
