isn't global interdependence just wonderful..in NY Times today mention
of possible protectionism on the US side..wouldn't that really spark
off the fire..don't see how government could do it unless enough
workers get laid off on this side of Atlantic..
wonder if Aussies are getting upset about selling their gold..

Vet - Frankly, I don't think that the US taxpayer should assume the risks for any private enterprise. Let the markets sort out the price of goods without intervention. Unfortunately, loan guarantees, subsidies, import restrictions, etc are prevalent in most economies. Americans pay higher prices for sugar to protect US sugar producers. We also subsidize corn growers through laws requiring the dilution of gasoline with ethanol. Agricultural products are extremely heavily subsidized in Japan. The Canadian govt subsizes mining companies through the extension of "gold loans", etc.

If your point is to prove what a rotten bunch we are in the USA, you are welcome to your opinion. Console yourself with the thought that the US is the source of all evil. The rest of the world is perfect, especially Canada.

WINNIPEG, Jan 8 (Reuters) - The Canadian Wheat Board (CWB) confirmed on Thursday it negotiated a US$35 million credit agreement with South Korea to maintain its market share there, a CWB spokesman said.

If you think that this kind of stuff is not reported in the US press, you are really out of touch with how the press works. Is there a conspiracy by the US press to suppress this kind of info? Geez, get a reality check.

Surely you wouldn't expect the US or anyone else to guarantee products from other countries, or am I missing your inference?

Having reread your article on US loan gurantees on Korean food
purchases I really don't see where they have been extended any
credit. If anyone is extending more credit it will likely be the Aussie
import/export bank. Regards, Ron
