Talk about a ship of fools...

...falling all over themselves, first raising estimates then lowering them. Not one of these clowns could find his butt if it had a bell on it.

But you guys were way off with revenue estimates. The consensus in SI was for sequential quarter to next growth...
Yep..we were off on the revenue..most of us were hoping for the 1.7-1.8 billion range but people did also cautioned that there were issues that may cause the revenue to be flat this Q. We also stated that even if revenue remains flat Apple could still show a profit. Remember this was back on Dec 5th when MacWEEK and others have proclaimed that Apple will be in the red until Q2 when the 10-K was filed.

Surely the introduction of G3,aggressive promotional programs, and lack of clone competition must have increased sales, however there are some issues that concern me:
1. I suspect that sales in October was relatively flat as potential buyers wait for the new machines.
2. There may not have been enough time between Nov.10th and Dec 31 (45 days) to significantly increaserevenue.
3. OS 8 unit sales should decrease significantly compare to last quarter. International sales of OS 8 should increase in Jan as the OS is localized but may be too late for this Q.
4. The average price of Mac is becoming lower. Thus even if the number of unit sold increases the revenue may not. Many buyers may have substituted the purchase of 8600 with much cheaper G3s.
5. Apple charged $75 million last quarter to pay for PowerComputing deal...there are still $25 million to go?

Even with revenue being flat at 1.6 billion. I think there is a good chance that Apple can turn a small profit this quarter. Operating expense should continue to decrease but don't expect the $40-50 million per quarter reduction rate because of promotional expense associated with X-mas season, CompUSA deal..etc.<<

No need to argue over details here. But I think its pretty clear that people here on SI offers very good analysis from various perspectives and I take what people say here very seriously. No one is saying that one should take these views as the words of god. But with a little filtering through your own brain, it gives one a pretty clear understanding of AAPL and its direction.

I think the information is pretty good in this forum (and the private e-mail it generates) and in this same sense, AAPL's recent upgrade by the First Bank of Alomex from "Avoid" to "Market Neutral" means something. Seriously. If Alomex has been generally right about AAPL's trend and representative of the overall market sentiment, then his new position signals that some other doubters are willing to take a second look.
