The heating elements went out in my first water heater after 15 years, but it never did leak. My home was built in 1981 and I'm sure the water heater they put in was very ordinary for the time.

They can last a long time with regular water. Hard water limits their lifespan to 5-7 years due to mineral buildup within the tank unless you're religious about regularly draining it. Usually the first thing to go nowadays is the thermostat followed by the heating element.

Just curious if you have a washing machine or floor drain in the basement?

What I was thinking about was how people drain a basement water heater.
