As it became more apparent Obama would win, the increase in unemployment rate of increase became steeper, until by year end it was approaching 7.5%.

In the same way that from the day Trump was elected and surprised the nation the economy has been improving.

It isn't the only reason, but consumer confidence crashed with Obama and hit a record low a week before he was elected.
