(COMTEX) YARC Systems Announces Compression Technology for Embedded C
YARC Systems Announces Compression Technology for Embedded Controllers

NEWBURY PARK, CALIF. (Jan. 16) BUSINESS WIRE -Jan. 16, 1998--YARC
Systems Corp. (OTC/BB:YARC) Friday announced that it has developed a
new method for significantly reducing the cost of RIP hardware used in
Embedded Controllers for Color Laser Printers and Copiers.

YARC's XK compression technology reduces the size of the data stored
in the Frame Buffer to one quarter of what was previously needed for an
8-bit contone controller.
The XK technology simultaneously increases the speeds at which data
can be sent to the laser engine. This is particularly important for
controllers intended for the next generation of multidrum color
engines. Speeds up to 30 megapixels per second can now be achieved,
even when using standard DRAM.

Yet YARC has achieved this reduction in buffer size without any
apparent loss of image quality and without any assumptions as to the
nature of data in the image. Every page can be imaged with XK
compression technology, regardless of its complexity.

XK compression has been optimized for laser engines operating at 600
and 1200 dpi, but it has also been demonstrated effectively using 400
dpi Laser Copiers from Canon Inc. (Nasdaq:CANNY).

YARC's controller designs are based on the Intel (Nasdaq:INTC) Pentium
technology developed for YARC's XP Server. YARC's designs offer
superior Network Administration and Network Protocol support by
comparison with the controller offerings from competitors Electronics
for Imaging (Nasdaq:EFII) and Splash Technology Holdings (Nasdaq:
SPLH).

YARC's XP Server is a plug-and-play networked Color Print Server for
Canon Laser Copiers and wide-format printers from ENCAD,
Hewlett-Packard, CalComp, Mutoh, Graphtec, Roland and Selex.

YARC designs and manufactures high-performance systems for the
personal computer and digital printing marketplace. YARC has long been
the acknowledged leader in Mac 3D Graphics multiprocessing technology.
Since 1993, YARC has focused its expertise on optimizing postscript
interpretation.

Certain of the above statements may be forward-looking statements that
involve risks and uncertainties. In such instances, actual results
could differ materially as a result of a variety of factors, including
competitive developments and risk factors listed from time to time in
the company's Securities and Exchange Commission reports. Notes to
Editors: 1. Pentium is a trademark of Intel Corp. 2. An Embedded
Controller is one or more circuit boards placed

inside a laser copier or laser printer that converts the data
being sent from PCs or workstations to a form where it can be

imaged on the engine's photo-voltaic drums for transfer to the
paper as a printed image. 3. A Frame Buffer is a section of DRAM
set aside for containing the

pixel image to be sent out to the laser engine's imaging drums. 4.
Some compression technologies require assumptions about the

nature of the data on the printed page. For example, a page
containing 50 percent printed text is easy to compress because 50

percent of the page carries information only in the Black toner
(assuming black text), the Cyan, Magenta and Yellow planes are

usually blank in this region and compress easily. 5. "Contone" is
the name given to continuous tone imaging, where it

is usual to have each pixel represented by 8 bits of data for
each of the engine's color tones.
