Beach, re: "Go figure,INTC beats by 9cents and stock falls and SUNW beats by 3
cents and stock rises."

The reason to me for this is obvious: Intel is extremely thorough, honest and conservative in their forward looking statements.

Thorough: how many other companies spend the time to look out four quarters estimating gross margins as Intel did. Instead, Sun's McNealy says "they say UNIX is dead. Well, if it is, it feels good." Sun comes out with a < $3K workstation to compete with Wintel. This isn't going to lead to lower margins for Sun? Most other companies say "we had a good Q and the future looks bright." Intel calculates exactly what they see coming, but, more often than not beat estimates. The street believes both but get burned by the cos with rose colored glasses more often than not. Intel stock over time will keep rising.

Honest and conservative? See above.

Have to run to a meeting .

Tony

Re: IEEE Spectrum 1998 Technology Analysis & Forecast

For all you techies out there, try to get hold of the January 1998 issue of IEEE Spectrum magazine. It has nice writeups on a wide variety of technologies. With respect to INTC, it discusses IBM's copper interconnect, multilevel memory cells (i.e. Intel StrataFlash), the Internet (of course) and Java (of course). Also of interest (to me anyway) was the controversy surrounding the massive new Three Gorges dam on the Chang Jiang River in China, and an interesting section on basic science.
