He is being treated that way because of what he says and his behavior and the way he treats other people. The funeral of George H.W. Bush reminded me that I do not dislike Trump because he is a Republican and I am a Democrat. There have been Democrat and Republican presidents during the 84 years of my life and I have liked all the presidents, regardless of their party, until we reached this one. I see Republicans as Americans, just as Democrats are, and I refuse to turn against all Republicans because of Trump and many of the Republicans who support him. Trump is not a real Republican any more than he is a real Democrat. Democrats right now are a foil for him to attack and blame, every chance he gets. He and his family are like the Snopes family in Faulkner’s novels: born and bred vulgarians, professional cheats, political parasites, viruses that live by corrupting their party’s code. Their party? Donald himself has been a Democrat, an Independent, a Republican, whatever seemed expedient at the moment. No one’s ever detected a firm conviction or value in what passes for his mind. It’s been suggested that he believes his own lies, but I doubt that. Belief of any kind is alien to his nature.
