MrB, re The 'adjust image' menu option (found both in Pshop and Pdeluxe) will help in understanding rez as it shows both pixel and physical dimensions as you change parameters. Notice, for example, when you adjust an image from 72 ppi to 144, the physical dimensions double in the dialog box. But changing the physical dimension itself without changing the ppi will degrade your picture.

Yes, I've played around with that, attempting to improve the quality of the image. Alas, I eventually figured out that it can't be done, or at least I couldn't do it. The 'adjust image' menu options seem to be only for adjusting the size of the file for viewing (and printing?) purposes. It's going to be a few weeks before I have enough free time to scan in a bunch more pictures, but it's a lot of fun.

When I get back into it I may e-mail you a question or two in re "gamma" and some of those other image quality options.
