You are, of course, correct. The public has always preferred to die in automobiles with the illusion of control over their fate, rather than in an aircraft with someone else, no matter how skilled, at the wheel. Recently not too far from me a family of five was killed when a drunk driver veered in front of them at high speed driving the wrong way on a divided highway. Humans just aren't good at assessing risk.
