You raised an interesting point in your post - re accumulation of such a large percentage given average daily volume of approx 100 000 shares - so I went back and did some further digging. It transpires that Morgan Stanley has been involved in GenRad for quite some time. Specifically, a Schedule 13G was filed on February 14, 1997. According to this filing, accounts managed on a discretionary basis by the Morgan Stanley Group Inc. held 2,015,734 shares, or 9.01%, while the corresponding figure for Morgan Stanley Asset Management was 1,858,276 shares, or 8.31%. What this in essence means is that the total number of net purchases during the ten day time frame (or in total since the Feb 1997 13G filing?) is the difference between the shares reported in the two 13G's i.e. (2,782,813 + 2,608,418) - (2,015,734 + 1,858,276) = 1,517,221.

I am unsure at this juncture if Morgan Stanley Dean Witter has an analyst who follows the company, and if so how the company is rated. I will post any further information that I come accross. In the interim, let's hope that we have a good earnings announcement, ugrades from the existing analysts, and initiation of coverage by additional analysts with a strong buy. A few market rallies would also be nice :-)

Regards

George
